JumpInChat Update — Descriptions, muting and testing

It’s been a while since my last update (unless you got my great big email I sent a little while back), but I’ve still been up to stuff. While there have been a few additions that you might notice, such as room descriptions, a lot of it has been internal improvements and testing. So here’s a quick look at what I’ve been up to.

Room descriptions

Descriptions can now be added to describe your room, explain what it’s about or perhaps how participants should behave. It will appear on the room directory beneath your room as well as in links you share on social media. It will also appear as a welcome message when a user joins your room. To add a description, head over to your room settings page

Mutable local audio

While being able to have a continuously broadcasting microphone has been a thing for a while now, it had no controls. Recently I’ve added the ability to mute this feed should one wish.

Smashing

Moderators can close a broadcast

Should you happen to ignore the aforementioned ability to mute your microphone, a room moderator can now close your broadcast instead. This can be performed either by an option in the broadcast dropdown menu or a chat command.

Equally smashing

Lots of testing

A goal for improving the stability of the site is to add much more test coverage over all. One major part of this is to add automated browser testing. What this does is to run through scenarios on the site in a real browser to ensure that everything is working correctly. These tests now run automatically when ever a new set of changes is committed, so hopefully I should catch any issues before you do.

Of cause, there’s still plenty of internal testing to add too. This will be a focus in the immediate term to make up for not thinking of doing this earlier.

Naturally you wont really notice any of this, aside from a possibly more reliable website.

As always, go to https://jumpin.chat and make a chat room, invite people and have fun and stuff.
The only way I can make this thing better is having you break it! Or even better getting even more people using it who then also break it!
