JumpInChat Update — Logging, UI improvements and sharing

The last however long it’s been since the last update has been a busy time, though once again it’s been mostly behind the scenes. The primary effort has been in improving logging. While this will not affect the user experience in any perceivable way, it will greatly improve the visibility on what goes on server-side and make debugging issues a great deal easier.

Aside from his, a few noticeable changes have been made. Screen sharing has been made more clear as a broadcast option. Notifications have been improved and interactions have been made less finicky. Meta tags have been improved so they they’ll now show up properly when you share your room on social media.

Logging

I’ve added a new mechanism with which I collect logs from the various servers, which adds better log formatting, searching and filtering as well as visualisations to create a detailed view on specific parts of the system.

Dashboards for different aspects of the system’s operation have been created, for acquisition and search visibility as well as system performance, error occurrences and malicious activity.

UI Improvements

A few UI improvements have been made, notably the change of the screen share option to a media source like other video sources. This should help avoid confusion as to how the heck it works.

Ignore the laziness

Sharing

Sharing a room has been improved and will now show the correct title, as well as the room display image if one has been added.

It’s a first step, but this opens up additional room-specific sharing options such as room descriptions and up-to-date info on the room.

What’s next

I’ve changed my tack a bit, and I’m going to focus a bunch more on getting users. Specifically getting people to create their own rooms, and getting people who created rooms to be more active. Site improvements will mostly focus on improving room creation and sharing, barring any useful fixes and important updates.

Additional new features, such as private messaging, will take a bit of a back seat so I can focus on making the core functionality more stable and easier to use. I’ll be working on new stuff when there’s more of a need for it.

As always, go to https://jumpin.chat and make a chat room, invite people and have fun and stuff.
The only way I can make this thing better is having you break it! Or even better getting even more people using it who then also break it!
